CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

ESCAPE

We pulled away from Athena in the van and any hope I had of making a swift exit from the airbase died. I dropped my head to stare at the painted metal floor.

‘How long do you think it will take for me to see someone in charge?’ I asked.

‘With the base on full lockdown, it will be a while before someone gets round to you,’ the MP replied.

‘But it will be too late by then.’

‘I’m afraid that’s just the way it is.’

My gaze snagged on the baton on his belt, slowly sliding itself out of its clip and rising up into the air behind the MP’s head, whose gaze was still on me.

It couldn’t be, could it?

I tried to keep my expression neutral as the air became opaque behind him and the form of young woman dressed in a dark, tight-fitting chameleon suit appeared.

The MP started to turn. ‘What the—’

Jules slammed the baton down onto his head. The guy sprawled forward as his eyes rolled up.

She peeled off the mask covering her face. ‘Are you okay, Dom?’

I just stared back at her, trying to process what had happened. ‘Better than that guard is doing.’

‘He’ll live.’ Grim-faced, she gestured to my ear. ‘You can hear again?’

I nodded. ‘It started to come back when they were airlifting Athena. But how did you get here?’

‘Hitched a lift in the back of a Black Hawk. Then I snuck onto this van and this was the first opportunity I had to rescue you. If I’d tried anything sooner they’d have caught me too.’

Jules ducked down to the knocked-out MP and started hunting through his pockets.

I stared at her, shaking my head. ‘You’re seriously amazing, Jules.’

‘You’re not the only one in this fight, Dom. You need to remember that sometimes.’

‘Yeah, I do.’ Outside the wind had begun to shriek and the van kept being buffeted. The driver, oblivious to what had happened back in this separate compartment, was having a hard time controlling the vehicle. But it couldn’t be long until we got to wherever we were headed.

I gazed at Jules. ‘Don’t call me ungrateful, but I can see a small flaw in your plan.’

She pulled out a key from the MP’s breast pocket and started fiddling with the cuffs behind my back. ‘Which is?’

The cuffs sprang open and I rubbed my wrists. ‘The moment they open the doors they’ll grab both of us.’

A slow smile filled Jules’s face. ‘Already thought of that.’ She unhitched a small rucksack on her back, took out a second chameleon suit and handed it to me. ‘Put this on. When they open the van all they’ll see is the knocked-out guard. Then all we have to do is to sneak back to Athena and get out of here and back to the others.’

I slowly shook my head, a smile spreading. ‘You really did think of everything.’

‘I can’t let you steal all the limelight, can I?’

I undid my belt. ‘Guess not.’

Her gaze sharpened.

I felt heat blaze across my face. ‘Jules, do you mind?’

‘Oh, you’re no fun.
